This is a guest post.

When designing a new home, or making plans to renovate an existing property, there are often dozens of selections to be made. One of the most important of these is the selection of flooring material. The right flooring can lift an entire project to a new level of design, quality, durability, and lifestyle. Among the most time proven of all flooring materials is timber and one of the best wood species you’ll ever find for timber flooring is Jarrah.

It sounds like it should be relatively easy to just hang a door quickly. And, truth be told, it’s not terribly difficult, but it does require a measure of care and concentration, otherwise all you’ll get is frustration. We look at how the experts do it, step-by-step.

Our contemporary lifestyles mean that we spend a fair amount of time in front of our computers, whether at work or home. To make sitting in front of the PC more comfortable it’s a good idea to use an ergonomic desk. When I first heard the word I had no idea what it meant; Wise Geek tells us that it’s a desk “designed to allow adjustments to both the height and tilt angle by the user”, and that it’s often used for computers and related equipment.

How to work with wood tools

Working with wood can be a very rewarding experience. When I was at middle school I spent hours in the woodwork room working on various projects and at the time I bemoaned all the effort that had to go into the pieces. A couple of years later and I have successfully made a bread-bin, a fold-down side table and a stand alone side table. I’m very proud of the things that I have made, and would love to take up woodwork again but am aware that the tools used for such a craft can be dangerous. If you use them with care and precision, however, you should be fine.

Staining wood will breathe new life into old wood, or spice up some newly made wooden furniture. Unlike simply using varnish, wood stains allow you to change the colour of wood so you can match it to other furniture or even experiment with colour if you so desire. Remember, however, that stains are permanent so don’t just go splashing it on willy-nilly.

Not all of us can afford to buy the expensive accessories that come with beds, such as headboards and bedside cabinets. But over time we can add these ourselves. Here is an easy way to make your own upholstered headboard that reflects your style and personality.

Tools of the trade:

Wooden doors need to be maintained especially if they face outdoors and are susceptible to the ever-changing weather conditions. If you want to revarnish an existing wooden door you’ll have to strip it of the old varnish first. This will ensure that when you paint on the new varnish it will adhere to the wood evenly and the colour will come out consistently.
